To get a better look at the heart, doctors utilize an ultrasound imaging procedure called an echocardiogram, which is also termed a cardiac echo.
A cardiac echo is the greatest technique to see how the heart muscle and heart valves are moving and working. If you have heart valve disease, abnormal heart rhythm, or illnesses of the cardiac muscle, such as dilated cardiomyopathy or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, you may need a cardiac echo.
The heart’s anatomy and function may both be examined using a cardiac echo to see if anything is amiss. It’s possible to see your heart beating on a screen thanks to the sound waves it emits. This gives your doctor the ability to examine your heart’s architecture from several perspectives while also keeping tabs on your heart’s rhythm.
It’s possible that you’ll benefit from a cardiac echo if you’re experiencing symptoms like weariness, breathlessness, or fainting. A stethoscope or an electrocardiogram (an examination of the electrical activity of the heart) may indicate that you have a structural heart disease, in which case you should seek immediate medical attention.
You’ll be placed on an examination table and a technician will apply some gel to your chest while the test gets underway. The transducer—a tiny microphone-like device—will then be placed in that location.
Sound waves are emitted from the transducer and are directed at your heart. The waves bounce off the heart’s structures and return to the transducer, where they are recorded, like sonar on a submarine. As a result, your heartbeat may be clearly seen on the screen as the data is analyzed by the computer.
The transducer is moved around by the technician in order to get a better view of your heart. A few seconds of lying on your side or holding your breath may be required during the examination. An echocardiogram might take anything from 30 minutes to an hour to complete.
The gel may be cleaned up with a tiny cloth or pad when the test is over. Your clothing will be ready, so you may depart in your current attire. Doctors often need some time to evaluate the test and certain photographs before putting up a report, so findings may not be available immediately.
After having an echo, there are no adverse effects and no need to alter your daily routine.
